Biodiversity

Did you know that your home garden is a vital piece of the habitat structure in the renewal of The Cape’s landscape from degraded farmland to a sustainable housing estate? The Cape’s landscape design is based around improving the biodiversity of our native fauna and flora. Each element of the estate is being built to work together to provide habitat for native fauna – starting with your home garden, it’s inter-relationship with the streetscapes, swales, drains, creeklines, wetlands, the retained natural habitat and the estate’s connection with the Yallock-Bulluk Marine and Coastal Park.
If you’re trying to establish your new garden and are not too sure where to start with creating your fire safe, habitat friendly and beautiful garden, you can download a list to give you some ideas. This resource should be used in conjunction with the DRP planting list as it contains helpful guidance as to which plants have proven they can cope with the sometimes tricky conditions.

There is also some interesting research and experiments being conducted around Climate Adjusting Provenance. This explores how we might be able to future proof our native forests and help them survive the anticipated changes associated with global warming. You can read about this research here.
