The Cape Residents Planting Guide

Don’t know what to plant in your garden? Please see the following comprehensive guide to assist The Cape community with the selection of plants.
If you’re not sure if something is a weed, check out the Bass Coast Shire’s Weed & Pest page.

Maintenance and asset management

If you’ve seen something at The Cape that needs attention, you can
send an email to capeocc@ourcapelife.org to report it.

Routine maintenance is regularly carried out by the Maintenance Team, and residents will usually be given as much notice as possible. But please remember, some things are urgent and can’t wait for a notice to be sent out.

Fireguard

Would you know what to do should a fire break out in the area? Do you know where the safer places are? Do you have any vulnerable neighbours who may need assistance during days of high fire danger? The local CFA runs a Fireguard program, where you can learn about all of these things. The program will help you have confidence in setting up your home, yourself and your community to increase survivability. You can find out the CFA’s current fire information for Cape Paterson here.

For more information and resources, visit cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/your-local-area-info-and-advice/community-fireguard.

Roads, walkways and parking

Just how fast is too fast on our roads that we share with people and wildlife? Can parking your car cause an issue?

For cyclists, the winding tracks are a great resource, but you never know who or what you will come across when you’re freewheeling around a bend. There are signs at road crossings and you should always slow down at these points and remind your kids about road safety. Please be mindful that cyclists, pedestrians and the wildlife share these tracks. If you should come across a mob of kangaroos (which is a regular occurrence) please ensure you don’t get too close or disturb them – it is not too difficult to turn off that track, cross some grass and skirt around them. The presence of kangaroos, and their acceptance of us, is one of the things we value.

Visitors at The Cape are very welcome, however you are encouraged to use the car parking provided in Sunlight Boulevard. If you’re unable to park in there, please ensure that you park in such a way as to not cause damage to the street plantings, create blind spots to other road users, or block residents’ driveways.

The signed speed limit of streets within The Cape is 40kmh.

Off leash dog park

Dogs on leash are most welcome at The Cape – but there is a world of joy awaiting dogs at our fenced off-leash dog park located in the south eastern corner of the estate.

Your dogs will enjoy meeting their buds here; experiencing the world though their noses; chasing a ball or 200; or running through the obstacles and ephemeral ponds.

Please remember though, The Cape is a Land for Wildlife property and some of the smaller creatures can also gain access to the dog park. Echidnas and snakes have been seen in the vicinity, so always keep a close eye on your dog – for their sake and for the sake of the wildlife.

Community awareness

A sense of community is one of the many things we value here at The Cape. Remember to check in with your neighbours to see how they’re going or to keep them up to date with your holiday plans. This is also a great strategy during the fire season (as part of the Fireguard program) or even during power outages (maybe you have a battery full of energy and can offer your neighbour a hot meal or cup of tea).

If you notice anything out of the ordinary, you can report it via 000 for emergencies; or 131 444 for when you need the police but not the sirens.
