Feral animals, weeds and rubbish

Feral animals

Foxes and feral cats have been sighted at The Cape and in the bush of the adjacent National Park. There is a great deal of knowledge around the impact these introduced species are having on the native wildlife throughout Australia. In short, our birds and small mammals are being killed in alarming numbers each day. When left unchecked, these feral animals cause local extinctions and will continue to push species towards the brink of extinction.

As a community, we are trying to understand the extent of the feral animal problem here at The Cape and to try and protect the species which are vulnerable to predation. But we need your help. If you see a fox or cat roaming anywhere on The Cape land or in the adjacent lands of the Yallock-Bulluk Marine and Coastal Park, send an email to Cape.Nature.Group@gmail.com to let us know. Please include the time, date, location, and a description or photo of the animal.

The local council of the Bass Coast Shire also have cat cages you can borrow to capture a feral or nuisance cat. You can ring 5671 2211 to book a cage or visit their very helpful Contact Us page to report a problem animal.

You can also report a sighting to Landcare or find out more information about what Landcare is doing around the feral fox problem, please visit the Landcare website.
