Foxes and feral cats have been sighted at The Cape and in the bush of the adjacent National Park. There is a great deal of knowledge around the impact these introduced species are having on the native wildlife throughout Australia. In short, our birds and small mammals are being killed in alarming numbers each day. When left unchecked, these feral animals cause local extinctions and will continue to push species towards the brink of extinction.
There are a number of things you can do to help to control feral animals, such as cats and foxes, at The Cape:
- Visit the council’s very helpful Contact Us page to report a problem animal.
- Report feral animals to the Landcare Pest Animal Team and find out more about their feral fox, cat and rabbit programs.
- Borrow a cat cage from the Bass Coast Shire to capture a feral or nuisance cat. Call the council on 5671 2211 or book online – it’s a free service. Rangers will ring you when one is available. The ranger will inform you of the rules and you’ll need to sign a Stat Dec stating that the cage is being used for a nuisance cat only. You will have the cage for a 4 day loan period. A ranger can either drop it off to you, or you can collect it. As soon as you catch a cat, call the council to arrange for the Ranger to come and collect it. If you are unsuccessful, a ranger will pick up the empty cage after the 4 day period.
